Q & A
Q: What has Syracuse University done to address campus safety and emergency preparedness?
A: While there is no evidence of any threats to the University community, University officials are in close contact with local, state and federal authorities for the latest information on the nation's heightened terror alert status.
The security of students, faculty, staff and visitors remains of utmost importance, and appropriate precautions will continue. Committees are in place to manage emergency planning and preparedness; assure coordination with local, state and federal emergency planning agencies; and coordinate communications with those on campus, parents and alumni, and those studying overseas.
The Department of Public Safety (DPS) has immediate access to timely and accurate information regarding threat assessment.
The University maintains an emergency operations center, and plans are in place to respond to a wide variety of potential situations. Additional equipment has been purchased to supply power to campus buildings in the event of an extended power outage.
Q: What if the Department of Homeland Security raises the threat level to red, indicating a severe risk of attack?
A: The University will be in contact with local and federal law enforcement agencies to determine if any additional precautions are necessary based on the type, location and specifics of any threats. If the threat affects SU, those on campus will be provided additional information about special precautions.
Information will be distributed through a variety of communications mechanisms, including this Web site, the University home page ( www.syr.edu ) and the Syracuse University News site ( http://sunews.syr.edu ); the Hot News e-mail system; WAER Radio (88.3 FM); and the University hotline, 443-1870.
Q: Will classes and campus events be canceled in the event of a red alert?
A: Students, faculty and staff should go about their normal activities unless directed otherwise. They are urged to be aware of their surroundings and to report suspicious activity immediately to the Department of Public Safety at 443-2224 (or 711 from a campus telephone).
Classes, events and sports competitions will not be canceled unless specific credible information is obtained indicating an increased and unforeseen risk to the University community. This information will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis by University officials.
Q: What can I do to help maintain my personal safety on campus?
A: Safety on campus is a responsibility we all share. The Department of Public Safety requests that all students, faculty, staff and visitors be aware of their surroundings, report unusual activities, and keep offices and residence halls secure. Do not prop doors open and do not allow another to enter on your I.D. card swipe. Report people in residence halls and other buildings who you think should not be there. Report packages or vehicles that seem to be out of place or abandoned.
Keep informed of the news and check your e-mail and the other University communications mechanisms listed above for important announcements.
Always carry your SU I.D.
Know the location of emergency exits, fire alarm pull boxes and evacuation routes while in a campus building (a good precaution at any time).
Prepare a list of personal emergency contact numbers.
Review the crime prevention section of the Department of Public Safety Web site ( http://publicsafety.syr.edu/crimprev.html ).
