Q: What kind of law enforcement training do peace officers receive?
A: New York state law requires peace officers to undergo 35 hours of law enforcement curriculum or, if planning to arm, a total of 75 hours, which is inclusive of both firearm and non-firearm training. The SU Department of Public Safety (DPS) has agreed, per individualized legislation, to retain its present 281-hour academy and, on a voluntary but traditional basis, its 12-14 weeks of field training upon graduating from the academy. In addition, DPS and the Syracuse Police Department are designing 100-200 hours of academy training to add to the curriculum. Annual in-service training of 30 hours per officer (22 of which are legally mandated under the Security Guard Act) will continue to be held. |
