Q: Do Public Safety officers with peace officer status drive vehicles with lights and sirens?

A: Yes. This is in accordance to the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law authorizing only emergency vehicles to use sirens, red lights or any combination of red lights and moving white lights. SU's Department of Public Safety (DPS) has approximately 13 vehicles that are equipped with red lights, siren and in-car video for audio-visual records of stops. Currently, all vehicles are equipped with radios, fire extinguishers, first aid equipment and flares. Having lights and sirens enables officers to respond more effectively and expediently to emergency situations, stop suspicious vehicles with cause, respond to DWI and other traffic calls, and keep witnesses and officers safer by increasing visibility at accident scenes. Policies and laws guide the usage of such equipment.
