Newhouse graduate journalism students gather outside Lawrinson Hall in response to a report of a situation in progress...

...and start taking notes.

ESF University Police escort a witness evacuated from the building.

Student journalists and professional videographers from Syracuse television stations follow the action.

Officers enter the building in response to a "shots fired" call.

A witness recounts what she saw and heard inside Lawrinson.

Another team of four officers enters the building. Each officer's handgun has an orange cable run through its chamber as a precaution to indicate the weapon contains no live rounds.

Student journalists observe and take notes along the perimeter, which for this exercise was much closer to the action than would be practical at an actual crime scene.

A Syracuse Police Department (SPD) sniper team takes position on the rooftop of neighboring Sadler Hall. Normally, the snipers would be invisible; for this scenario the officers intentionally stood out to be seen by the students.

Officers in full gear from the SPD's Emergency Response Team enter Lawrinson.

More students evacuate the building as officers clear the floors.

ERT officers set up outside the room where the suspect has barricaded himself...

...and continue to evacuate the building's occupants.

After storming the barricaded room, officers take the suspect (a.k.a. Newhouse adjunct instructor Charlie Miller) into custody.

The shooter's accomplice is apprehended at their stolen car parked nearby.

The Onondaga County Sheriff's Department's Air 1 helicopter leaves the scene after providing air support.

Officials from the FBI, SPD, SU and Rural/Metro Medical Services conduct a press briefing as the scenario winds down.
